Talán sokan nem tudják, hogy a bécsi szeletnek hívott étel receptje Milánóból érkezett a császárvárosba. Ugyan nem Bécsben született, azonban itt lett az osztrákok nemzeti ételévé, amelyet a Monarchia idején a magyarok is megszerettek. A rántott hús első leírása egy régi bizánci szakácskönyvben maradt fenn. A Konstantinápolyt ostromló arabok megtanulták a panírozást a helyi szakácsoktól, majd elterjesztették a módszert az uralmuk alá hajtott ibériai félszigeten.
